Sight Seeing
Kali River
The lifeblood of Dandeli’s adventure scene, the Kali River is famous for its thrilling white-water rafting (especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon season). Beyond rapids, the river offers serene kayaking, river crossing, and coracle rides. Its banks are perfect for peaceful picnics and sunset views, with the sound of flowing water creating a constant, calming backdrop.
Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary
A haven for biodiversity, this sanctuary is part of the lush Western Ghats. It’s best explored through jeep safaris or guided nature walks, where you might spot black panthers, elephants, gaurs (Indian bison), deer, and rare bird species like the Malabar pied hornbill and the great hornbill. The dense forests and riverine ecosystem make every safari an exciting encounter with the wild.
Syntheri Rocks
A stunning 300-foot monolithic granite cliff rising beside the serene Kaneri River, Syntheri Rocks is a geological marvel and photographer’s paradise. Visitors can climb to viewpoints, enjoy a picnic, and explore the small caves at the base. The site is especially magical during the early morning when mist wraps around the rocks.
Kavala Caves
An ancient natural limestone cave formation, accessible by descending around 375 steep steps through dense forest. Inside, you’ll find striking Shivalinga-shaped stalagmites worshipped by locals. The cave is dimly lit and filled with bats, offering a mystical and adventurous experience for those interested in geology and local spirituality.
Ulavi Temple
A historic and spiritually significant site located deep in the forest, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is associated with the 12th-century Lingayat saint, Shri Chandragupta Shivayogi, and features a unique stone chariot. The peaceful surroundings and ancient architecture attract pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike.
Suba Dam
One of the largest dams in Karnataka, built across the Kali River. While entry inside may be restricted, the viewpoints around the dam are impressive, showcasing vast waters and lush surroundings. The area near the dam is also great for sighting crocodiles and water birds.
Back Water
Formed by the Supa Dam, the serene backwaters of the Kali River offer a tranquil escape amidst submerged trees and rolling hills. Perfect for photography, birdwatching, and peaceful coracle or boat rides, this calm expanse is a beautiful contrast to Dandeli’s adventurous landscapes. Don’t miss the sunset view from Nagajhari Point for a truly magical experience.
Nagajhari Viewpoint
A lesser-known gem offering spectacular views of the backwaters of the Supa Dam (also known as the Nagajhari Dam). The sight of submerged tree trunks emerging from the water against a backdrop of hills is surreal and popular with photographers, especially during sunrise or sunset.
Shiroli Peak
The highest point in Uttara Kannada district, Shiroli Peak offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the Dandeli forest range, the Kali River valley, and even distant glimpses of Goa on clear days. It’s a popular spot for sunrise and sunset viewing, photography, and short treks.
